Avvo rates lawyers along a 10-point scale, using information the lawyer has included on their Avvo profile in addition to the information that Avvo collects from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Many factors are included in the Avvo rating of any given lawyer, including (1) Experience & Background, which examines things like years licensed, work experience, and education, (2) Legal Community Recognition, which examines factors such as peer endorsements, associations, and awards, (3) Legal Thought Leadership, which evaluates the attorney’s contributions such as publications or speaking engagements, and (4) Discipline, which is an inquiry into the attorney’s disciplinary history (although disciplinary information may not be comprehensive or updated, and Avvo recommends that you always check a lawyer’s disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them).
